Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, 2020 Côte de Nuits North: Chambolle-Musigny to Marsannay (11/1/2021)
(Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru, Domaine Henri Magnien, Red)" Purple in colour of medium plus density. Has reduced the new oak here which slightly softens the bouquet in an attractive way. A fine perfumed nose, floral notes underpinned by the raspberries of the vintage, graceful and very persistent. This is extremely nicely done. Fine. 92-95 points"
Henri Magnien Description
"Charles Magnien is the twelfth generation at his family’s domaine in Gevrey Chambertin. They have six hectares of vines, mostly in Gevrey in some key parcels, Ruchottes, Lavaut Saint Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux. The famous vineyards garner the attention, but equally as rich as the land is the old vines. In 1850, the family discovered a mutation of Pinot Noir, which was named after the family, Pinot Magnien. The Pinot Magnien is a part of the blend in their Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes cuvee where the oldest vines are 100 years-old. Charles took over from his father in 2009 and immediately invested his energy and efforts in the vineyards where he is working with a higher canopy. He is following organic agriculture, but will treat if necessary. Charles Magnien is the first in his family to bottle all of the wine that they grow and now with more than ten vintages under his belt, the Henri Magnien wines are quickly becoming recognized as some of the best in the village." Wine Advocate: 92 Points
"The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux bursts with aromas of plums, wild berries, rose petals and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with bright acids and rich, velvety tannins, it's deep and seamless, concluding with a long, perfumed finish." William Kelley 92+

Burghound, Jan-22, Issue #85
(Domaine Henri Magnien et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin "Champeaux" 1er Cru Red) "More subtle though still perceptible wood sets off ripe dark berry aromas, especially cassis, along with hints of game and earth. There is excellent volume to the sappy but solidly punchy flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the balanced and youthfully austere finish. This is sufficiently firm to require at least some patience and wine that should reward 12+ years of keeping. (Drink starting 2032) 91-93 points"
